Plastic News : Proposed RTP compounding plant faces opposition in Ireland

RTP Co. is being challenged in its attempt to build a compounding plant in Ireland.

Winona, Minn.-based RTP, a major global compounder, has submitted plans to build a plant in Skibbereen, a town of about 3,000 less than 10 miles from Ireland’s southern coast. The 16,000-square-foot plant would create as many as 40 new jobs.

The plant is opposed by Save Our Skibbereen, a protest group that’s concerned about the environmental impact of the plant.

Save Our Skibbereen (SoS), a campaign group set up to oppose the construction of a plastic compounding factory on the outskirts of the west Cork town, is seeking financial support for a judicial review against the project.

The campaigners want to overturn permission given by An Bord Pleanala for the plant, which will include two production buildings and four silos. They need an initial €15,000 to pay for the legal action.

There is a groundswell of opposition to the factory plan in Skibbereen, writes Noel Baker.

Children in a classroom in Union Hall Primary School, where Brendan McCarthy is principal, recently debated the whys and wherefores of plastics and whether or not a proposed plastics factory earmarked for nearby Skibbereen should go ahead.

They found against it.

Southern Star : WATCH: Packed ballroom for SOS anti-Plastics Factory meeting

Hundreds of locals packed the ballroom at the West Cork Hotel on Thursday night in response to last week’s An Bord Pleanala decision to give the Skibbereen plastic factory the go ahead.

It was announced at the event that the committee of Save Our Skibbereen (SOS) is to seek a judicial review of the decision.
